Michelle Duggar Confesses Shocking Medical Condition To Help Daughter

Jinger Duggar Vuolo is opening up about her teenage battle with disordered eating and revealing how her older sister Jana Duggar and mother Michelle Duggar helped her through one of the most difficult periods of her life.
During the Wednesday, October 14, episode of the “Call Your Sister” podcast, Jinger, 32, spoke candidly with her younger sister Joy-Anna Duggar about her unhealthy relationship with food and the emotional conversation that finally pushed her to seek help.
Jinger Duggar Breaks Down During Conversation With Jana
Jinger recalled reaching a breaking point when she admitted to Jana, 36, that her fear of gaining weight had begun controlling her eating habits.
“I remember one time I was talking to my older sister, and I broke down and told her, I said, ‘I think I’m struggling with this because I really don’t want to eat food that’s going to make me fat,’” Jinger shared.
“I said, ‘I think I’m avoiding that.’ I told her that, and I was weeping.”
The former Counting On star explained that an earlier experience at a Journey of the Heart event had also left a lasting impression on her.
While attending the gathering, Jinger encountered a young woman battling bulimia whose deteriorating health frightened her.

“I went on a trip to one of those Journey of the Heart things [before], and I remember I saw a girl who struggled with bulimia, and she was literally sickly and she had so many health issues,” Jinger recalled.
“She looked terrible because her body was withering away and she was in a terrible place. Ultimately, I was looking at her and I’m like, ‘Just stop doing that’ as I’m over here doing the same thing in a different way ‘cause I did not have bulimia … but I was avoiding everything.”
Michelle Duggar Reveals Her Own Eating Disorder Struggles
Jinger eventually realized she needed support and turned to her sisters, including Jana and possibly Jill Duggar, before approaching her mother.
“I remember talking to Jana and maybe Jill was there too, but I told ‘em, I said, ‘I don’t want to do this, and I want to get accountability,’” she explained.

Once Jinger returned home, she told Michelle about her restrictive eating habits. However, she wasn’t expecting her mother to reveal that she had experienced a similar struggle during her younger years.
“We were not at home, so when I got back home, I told Mom everything, that I was struggling [and] how I was avoiding food. She met me with such grace and kindness and she said, ‘Jinger, I struggled with bulimia when I was young.’”
Hearing Michelle’s confession helped Jinger feel less alone, especially since her mother understood how damaging an unhealthy relationship with food could become.
Jinger Credits Michelle With Helping Her Recovery
Rather than reacting with panic or pressuring her daughter to eat large amounts of food, Michelle approached the situation with patience and encouragement.
“She was not like, ‘Oh my goodness, here’s three cheeseburgers, eat them all,’ but she was like, ‘No, it’s OK, you can eat healthy food and be healthy,’” Jinger recalled.
“She also said, ‘You don’t need to avoid food because that’s going to harm your body later.’ And so, she got me on an accountability track.”
Michelle also developed a system to help Jinger stay accountable for eating regularly, even when the two weren’t together.

“I was one of the first ones to get a phone in the family, [and Mom] said, ‘Text me when it’s time to eat [and] you text me everything you ate,’” Jinger explained.
“She would also check in on me. So, we were eating meals, but if she was gone, I would text her and I would have accountability from somebody else who was there, like, ‘This is what I’m eating.’”
Looking back, Jinger’s emotional revelations offer a glimpse into a personal struggle that viewers never saw during her family’s years in the spotlight.
Her decision to confide in Jana ultimately opened the door to an important conversation with Michelle, whose own experience with bulimia helped her recognize what her daughter was going through.
